I can only repeat much of the praise in the other 38 reviews before mine. This is a very complete, very detailed and fascinating telling of a pivotal period in Japanese history. On a personal level I am a Buddhist but also a collector of vintage & antique Buddhist temple/altar items. This book helps me match my items to their place in history as well as the rolls of Buddhism & Shinto under The Meiji.It's a great read, especially if this period of Japanese history really interests you.
